Seattle History is marked by periods of big ups and downs. Boom, bust and boom in sequence have seen near-permanent decline during the worst periods. Typically those periods were successful in rebuilding infrastructure. The city’s setting in its quintessential locales gives it a very physical appeal.
Historically there have been five cyclic periods marking the city’s growth. The lumber-industry boom saw the construction of an Olmsted-designed park system. The Klondike gold rush in 1897 constituted the largest boom for Seattle by ending all economic woes.
The shipbuilding boom had expansion and development in its wake based on Virgil Bogue’s city plans. The Boeing boom had massive infrastructure building and is still part of the city’s upbeat profile. Recently the IT Company’s boom has seen the re-emergence of Seattle. Seattle's economy is now rich and vibrant and there has been an increase in cultural activities.
